Phil and Julie
Missionaries in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia

We have been serving as Student evangelists in Jakarta, Indonesia for 14 years. We established a house church three years ago with university students & young working professionals. Our focus has been to equip, disciple & mentor these young believers to reach out to their neighbors, friends, co-workers & extended family. Our prayer has been that God would bring about a church planting movement among this population of Indonesia.  Many of the young people come from neighboring islands so the potential to reach the islands for Christ is a real possibility in HIS timing.

Current ministry assignment:  Jakarta Student Ministries Team
Mission Assignment:   Student Evangelists
Mission Experience:   Both grew up as MKs; Each set of parents served for 35+ years; introduced as young people to the need for foreign missionaries. Phil called to missions at the age of 22 while serving as a Jman in Bangkok, Thailand. Julie sensed a calling to foreign missions at the age of 9 while attending Glorieta Foreign Missions Week. We met while Phil was serving his two year assignment in Thailand. The Lord brought us back together while Phil was studying at SWBTS. After graduation, we served as youth ministers at a local church in Charleston, S.Carolina. During our time in S. Carolina, the Lord confirmed HIS timing in directing us to Jakarta, Indonesia. We arrived on the field in October 1993. We serve the university students of the capital city of Jakarta along with our four daughters, Ashley (18), Katie (16), Emily (12), & Natalie (6).

OUR TEAM STRATEGY:  By His guidance, we will introduce students to Christ; nurture them in the faith; and involve them in the life and mission of the church, believing that God will bring about a church planting movement in the city of Jakarta.

In order to be active participants in broad seed-sowing, we have weekly events such as English clubs (every Wednesday and Friday), coffee club (Friday afternoons), sports club (Saturdays evenings), and a radio show (Monday-Friday evenings). Each conversation and appointment with students is with the intention of sharing TRUTH for the purpose of evangelism. We facilitate on-going discussion groups that focus on matters pertinent to university students as well as young working professionals. In 2006 we held four seeker retreats for the purpose of fellowship and spiritual emphasis. Our on-going purpose is to seek out those who desire to grow in their walk with the Lord as well as introduce non-believers to Gods Word. We immediately encourage these young men & women to begin their own Bible study groups on campus, in their dorms, as well as work places. So that we encourage them in the life mission of the church, we mobilize and encourage these individuals by going together to share their faith. For accountability, we meet together once a month for a time of sharing as small group leaders. We provide opportunities for monthly seminars on topics such as “Identifying your Spiritual Gifts, Living Victoriously, How to have an effective prayer life, and Knowing the will of God as well as training that will be useful in discipleship and evangelism.

  •  Pray for small groups that are meeting weekly to be bold in their witness of Christ.
  • Pray for for our house church Jemaat Kasih Kristus to establish themselves within the community and area and beyond (Acts 1:8).
  • Pray that national leaders will take the challenge of reaching the lost around them.
  • Pray that a church planting movement will begin among the students of Jakarta
